View Video Tribute Katie Jo Appel, 18, of rural Hicksville, Ohio, died at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, July 8, 2005, at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio, after a sudden illness. Katie was a 2005 graduate of Fairview High School. She was a member of the Fairview Apache Ladies Basketball Team and the Varsity Club. She also played softball for the Flying Eagles. Katie Jo Appel was born on June 14, 1987, in Defiance, Ohio, the daughter of Kevin L. and Jodi R. (Bernath) Appel. Surviving is her father, Kevin L. Appel, of Hicksville, Ohio, mother, Jodi R. Appel, of Bryan, Ohio, sister, Marissa L. Appel, of Hicksville, half-brother, Todd Taylor, of Toledo, Ohio; maternal grandparents, Ronald and Joann Bernath, of Wauseon, Ohio; and paternal grandparents, Deloy and Mary Appel, of Ney, Ohio. Funeral services for Katie Jo Appel will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, in the Krill Funeral Home, Bryan, Ohio, with Pastor Chris Sigmon officiating. Interment will follow in Farmer Cemetery, Farmer, Ohio. Visitation for Katie Jo Appel will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2005, in the funeral home. Memorials in the name of Katie Jo Appel may be given to the Defiance County Humane Society.
