Howard Edgar Buell, age 87, of Hamilton, Indiana, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2024 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne following a brief illness.
Howard was born October 31, 1936 on the family farm in Richland Township, Steuben County, Indiana, the son of Edgar “Pop” and Mattie Lorene (Gilbert) Buell. Howard enjoyed growing up on the family farm, fishing in Fish Creek and just roaming around the neighborhood. He attended Metz Grade School and High School, graduating in 1955. He played basketball and baseball. He especially loved baseball and during this time, his love for the Boston Red Sox began. This love would last throughout his life and would be high lighted in 2004 when the Red Sox finally won the World Series.
After High School, he entered the US Army and spent most of his 2 year enlistment as a medic at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. After active duty, he served another 4 years on Active Reserve duty.
On June 5, 1960, Howard married Bonnie Champion. They were partners for 52 years, and they were good years. Among the many good times they shared together were trips to Las Vegas. Bonnie died on March 30, 2012, he never got over losing her.
Howard and Bonnie lived on the farm where he was born their whole lives together. He always considered himself a farmer, but also worked at Powers & Sons in Montpelier, Ohio, Farmer’s Ag in Butler, Indiana, Buell’s Market which was co-owned by Bonnie & Howard and he was Produce Manager and Village Foods in Hamilton, Indiana until he retired.
He was a longtime member of Edon United Methodist Church, who’s members were all his friends. No doubt, the most important thing in Howard’s life was his family. Next in line was his country and God.
Surviving are his sons, Jeffrey (Carmen) Buell, of Homestead, Florida and Timothy (Lena) Buell, of Amsterdam, Netherlands; granddaughters, Bonnie, Natalie, and Viktoria; grandson, Maksim; sister, Harriet Gettys, of Thornville, Ohio; great granddaughter, Christina; nephew, Jody Gettys and niece, Robin LaRue and many Buell cousins. After Bonnie’s death his lifelong first cousin, Darlene Holden, was his best friend and confidant.
